Travel Study - Mexico

Teotitlán

Teotitlán is a village located about 30 miles slightly southeast of Oaxaca. In recent years the village has become well known for its quality weavings. Tourists from around the world visit Teotitlán to admire and purchase the indigenous art produced by the village's inhabitants.

Beneath the colorful and rustic image of an indigenous people selling their art and craft to westerners, there lies a complex and surprising social system that most tourists never suspect, much less know. In this course anthropologist Sharon Tiffany introduces students to the weavers of Teotitlán and their families. Students get a first hand look at the family and social structure of the village. Students also learn about the connections between the global economy and the people living in this rural village in southern Mexico.
